Elanco Animal Health has introduced Varenzin-CA1, an oral suspension for cats with non-regenerative anaemia linked to chronic kidney disease, marking the first FDA conditionally approved at-home treatment for this condition in the US.

Elanco Animal Health has brought to market Varenzin-CA1, a once-daily oral suspension for cats with non-regenerative anaemia linked to chronic kidney disease. In the US, the company says it is the first FDA conditionally approved treatment for this indication, offering clinicians an alternative to in-clinic injections and a practical at-home option for owners managing long-term renal disease.

The active ingredient, molidustat, is a hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor. By triggering the cat’s own erythropoietin production, it is intended to support red blood cell formation when kidney disease has left endogenous EPO output diminished. Elanco says this mechanism may help improve oxygen delivery and overall clinical stability in affected patients.

The company points to clinical data showing that 50% of cats had improved red blood cell counts by day 28 and 75% by day 56. In a separate summary, Elanco said 68% of cats achieved treatment success after one month. The oral suspension is also presented as palatable, with a fish oil flavour and an 88% voluntary acceptance rate.

For practitioners, the attraction is likely to be convenience as much as efficacy: once-daily dosing at home may reduce treatment burden for owners and broaden access to therapy for CKD patients with anaemia. Elanco also positions the product as a feline-specific option compared with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents not approved for cats.
