Ceva Animal Health has completed its acquisition of Spanish biotech firm Aquilón CyL, enhancing its offerings in pig intestinal health and introducing Europe’s first Brachyspira hyodysenteriae vaccine, signalling a shift towards antibiotic reduction in herd management.

Ceva Animal Health has completed its acquisition of Aquilón CyL, a Spanish biotechnology company focused on swine diagnostics and biological solutions for enteric disease. Aquilón, founded in 2012 and spun out of the University of León, has spent more than a decade working on the pig digestive tract and translating that research into commercial products with farm-level impact, according to Ceva.

The deal strengthens Ceva’s swine intestinal health portfolio and brings in what the company says is the first and only commercial vaccine in Europe targeting Brachyspira hyodysenteriae, the bacterium behind swine dysentery. For veterinary teams dealing with herd performance and antimicrobial stewardship, the acquisition points to continued industry interest in prevention tools that may help reduce antibiotic dependence.

Dr Marc Prikazsky, Ceva’s executive chairman, said the acquisition would bolster the company’s intestinal health capabilities. Carlos Artigas, Aquilón’s director, said the business had found the right setting for growth within Ceva. Terms were not disclosed.
