The Cat Health Company reports promising phase II results for feline muscle loss treatment
The Cat Health Company has announced positive phase II trial outcomes for PURR-001, a weekly oral medication for age-related muscle loss in older cats, bringing the treatment closer to European regulatory review following a licensing agreement with Vetro Solutions.
The Cat Health Company has reported encouraging phase II results for PURR-001, a once-weekly oral treatment it is developing for age-related muscle loss in older cats, alongside a licensing deal that moves the programme closer to manufacturing and regulatory review in Europe.
In a state-supervised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, multi-site trial in Europe involving 35 geriatric cats aged 10 and above, the company said animals given PURR-001 gained an average of 7 per cent in body mass over 12 weeks, compared with 1 per cent for placebo. Ultrasound measurements of epaxial muscle thickness rose by 23 per cent in the treated group, against 9 per cent in controls. The company added that blood tests remained within normal limits and adverse events were broadly similar in both groups.
According to The Cat Health Company, Vetro Solutions will handle industrial-scale manufacturing, regulatory dossier preparation and regional distribution across seven major European markets. Financial terms were not disclosed. The start-up says it retains US and wider international rights.
The company, which says it is building a pipeline around feline ageing, plans further work in chronic kidney, neuronal and cardiovascular disease. PURR-001 remains investigational and is not approved for prescription.
