Russia will temporarily halt transit of poultry meat and offal from European Union plants from 5 August, citing animal disease prevention and recent falsified veterinary papers as key concerns.

Russia will from 5 August temporarily block the transit through its territory of poultry meat and offal produced by European Union plants, the agriculture watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor has said.

The agency said the measure was intended to curb the possible spread of animal disease and protect consumers. It pointed to a recent case in which poultry offal, described as German in origin, was moved through Poland and across Russia on its way to Uzbekistan under falsified veterinary papers. Rosselkhoznadzor said the exact source of the cargo has not yet been established and that it has asked Uzbek authorities to help identify the shipper.

Transit of consignments certified and dispatched before 5 August will be allowed until 6 August inclusive. The restriction will remain in place until talks with the European Commission are held on the basis of the findings of the investigation.

The move is the latest in a series of biosecurity measures by the Russian agency. In June, Rosselkhoznadzor imposed restrictions on a range of quarantine-controlled goods from Armenia, including transit to other Eurasian Economic Union members, citing the need for greater traceability and safety controls.
