PetIQ has acquired MYOS Corp, integrating its Fortetropin portfolio into its pet care platform, marking a strategic move into the growing muscle-health supplement market for companion animals.

PetIQ has completed its purchase of MYOS Corp, bringing the muscle-health specialist’s Fortetropin portfolio into its pet care platform, the company said. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal gives PetIQ a foothold in a category that is drawing more interest from owners seeking preventive products for mobility, recovery and ageing animals. MYOS sells both consumer supplements and veterinary-exclusive formulations, and will continue to market the MYOS name and Fortetropin ingredient after the transaction.

Fortetropin is a patented bioactive ingredient derived from fertilised egg yolk and is designed to support muscle preservation by influencing myostatin, the protein that regulates muscle mass. MYOS says the ingredient has been the subject of more than a dozen clinical studies across people and companion animals, including dogs, cats and horses, and it has also built a patent portfolio around the technology.

Camillo Pane, PetIQ’s chief executive, said the acquisition would help the group enter a fast-growing segment and broaden its health and wellness offer. Joe Mannello, MYOS’s chief executive, said PetIQ’s distribution reach and brand-building capability would help the business scale.

Lincoln International advised PetIQ and Bansk Group, while Class VI Partners advised MYOS.
