Hikma Pharmaceuticals’ August rally signals potential shift rather than mere post-results rebound
Hikma Pharmaceuticals sees a significant uptick in share price amid strong first-half results and cautious guidance, prompting speculation over whether the rerating can sustain its momentum amid broader industry challenges.
Hikma Pharmaceuticals’ August rebound looks more like a reset trade than a simple post-results bounce. First-half revenue rose 4% to $1.728bn and core operating profit 9% to $405m, while reported operating profit climbed 30% to $336m and operating cash flow increased 33% to $214m. Management left 2026 guidance at 2% to 4% revenue growth and $720m to $770m of core operating profit, but Reuters said RBC viewed that stance as conservative after the shares opened at 1,641p and touched 1,733p, with the stock up as much as 10.3% for its biggest one-day gain since September 2022.
The harder question is whether that rerating can persist. Pretax profit still fell 2.7% to $287m as net financing costs swung to a $49m expense and royalty-related remeasurements had a $71m impact. Branded revenue, helped by Saudi Arabia, rose 15%, and research spending reached 5% of sales, signalling a broader repair effort after February’s abandoned medium-term targets.
Hikma says it is well placed to withstand potential US tariffs on generic-drug imports and strengthen its US supply chain. Net debt was $1.694bn against $790m of undrawn facilities; the interim dividend rose to 38 cents, the $250m buyback continued and Tobias Hestler joined the board as an independent non-executive director on 7 August.
