A comprehensive international study reveals disparities between veterinarian advice and cat owner perceptions, highlighting opportunities to boost feline vaccination through improved communication and education.

A new global study published by MSD Animal Health has identified opportunities to improve feline vaccination rates by strengthening communication between veterinarians and cat owners. The findings, presented at the 2026 World Feline Congress and published in Veterinary Sciences, are based on responses from 5,071 cat owners and 1,330 companion animal veterinarians across 14 countries.

The survey found differing perceptions of the role vaccination plays in maintaining feline health. While 69% of veterinarians identified vaccination as a key contributor to feline health, only 16% of cat owners did so. Instead, owners most frequently cited high-quality nutrition, regular veterinary check-ups and affection as the primary factors supporting their cat’s wellbeing.

Veterinarian recommendations emerged as one of the strongest drivers of vaccination decisions. Among owners of vaccinated cats, 57% said their veterinarian’s advice influenced their decision, while 71% of veterinarians believed their recommendation was a key factor. However, the study also highlighted an educational gap: although 58% of cat owners rely on veterinarians for vaccine information, only 23% of veterinarians reported routinely sharing educational materials on vaccination.

Among owners who chose not to vaccinate, the most common reasons included the belief that vaccination is unnecessary for healthy or indoor cats. Veterinarians similarly identified limited client understanding and vaccine misinformation as significant barriers to compliance.

The researchers conclude that improved communication and educational resources from veterinary professionals could help address misconceptions and support higher vaccination uptake among companion cats.
