Merck invests $50,000 to boost future poultry veterinarians amid sector challenges
Merck Animal Health has awarded scholarships to five veterinary students specialising in poultry, reinforcing industry commitment to veterinary talent in a crucial sector facing biosecurity and welfare pressures.
Merck Animal Health has awarded $50,000 in scholarships to five veterinary students pursuing poultry-focused careers, extending an 11-year partnership with the American Association of Avian Pathologists Foundation.
The grants, announced at the AAAP Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, on July 28-30, go to students at Michigan State University, North Carolina State University, Mississippi State University, Texas Tech University and the University of Georgia. Each recipient receives $10,000.
The latest awards bring the partnership’s total scholarship support to more than $280,000, underscoring sustained industry investment in the pipeline for poultry medicine at a time when commercial production depends heavily on field veterinarians, diagnostic expertise and flock health management.
Merck Animal Health said the scholarships are intended for second- and third-year veterinary students with a clear interest in poultry health. The company described the recipients as future leaders in poultry production and welfare, while AAAP said the students’ training and leadership will be important to safe and sustainable egg and meat production.
This year’s awardees include students with experience ranging from coccidiosis research and diagnostic laboratory work to commercial poultry internships and student leadership roles. Their stated career plans include poultry production practice, poultry medicine residencies and field veterinary roles in the commercial sector.
For veterinarians in practice, the scholarships offer another sign that poultry medicine continues to draw targeted support from major animal health players and professional associations, even as the sector faces pressure to maintain biosecurity, welfare standards and productivity.
