The World Small Animal Veterinary Association has revised its dental guidance for 2026, emphasising the importance of robust standards in small animal oral health amid concerns over undervalued dentistry and the risks of anaesthesia-free procedures.

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association has updated its dental guidance for 2026, signalling that oral disease in companion animals remains a major clinical and welfare issue. The revision is designed to give practices clearer standards at a time when dentistry is often undervalued, yet is among the most common problem areas in small animal work.

Published as part of WSAVA’s wider global guidelines programme, the new edition builds on the 2019 version and reflects advances in diagnosis, treatment and teaching. It adds material on dental and maxillofacial trauma, juvenile pathology, ergonomics, the contribution of veterinary nurses and technicians, and a more detailed approach to radiographic interpretation.

According to WSAVA, the guidance is intended to set minimum standards while also pointing clinicians towards best practice. It covers diagnosis, treatment, anaesthesia, pain control, home care and nutrition, and it places unusual emphasis on the risks of anaesthesia-free dentistry, which the association and its dental committee describe as ineffective at best and harmful at worst.

The stakes are commercial as well as clinical. Better dental care can improve patient outcomes, support client confidence and sharpen differentiation for practices competing in a crowded market where preventative medicine increasingly matters.
