By contrast, Salmonella was detected in just one sample, and that strain lacked the virulence and resistance markers the team examined.
The resistant E. coli strains were particularly associated with older, inexpensive drugs widely used in both human and veterinary medicine, including sulphonamides, tetracyclines, amoxicillin, ampicillin and doxycycline. The researchers said the result was striking because the animals were not reported to be receiving routine antibiotics, suggesting resistant bacteria may circulate through environmental contact rather than direct treatment alone.
Similar concerns have been reported elsewhere. Studies in Italy, Germany and central Europe have found wild boars carrying extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli and other resistant strains, with some evidence linking prevalence to human population density. Together, the findings reinforce a broader concern: wildlife can act as a reservoir for antimicrobial resistance, creating another pathway between farms, forests and, potentially, people.
