Veterinary interest in GLP-1 analogues for pet obesity sparks cautious exploration

Emerging research explores the use of human weight-loss drugs like liraglutide and exenatide in treating obesity in dogs and cats, but experts warn the approach remains experimental amid safety concerns and limited evidence.

Medicines built on GLP-1 analogues, the class behind human weight-loss injections, are attracting veterinary interest as a possible tool against obesity in dogs and cats. But researchers and clinicians caution that the idea remains experimental and should not be mistaken for a routine treatment.

In Brazil, the Federal University of Uberlândia tested liraglutide in obese cats and reported roughly a 10% weight reduction over two weeks, alongside vomiting, diarrhoea and a marked fall in appetite. That pattern is consistent with known human side effects of liraglutide, which major drug references say can include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, and more serious risks such as pancreatitis and thyroid tumours.

Other work suggests the field is advancing. In the United States, Okava is testing an implant designed to release exenatide gradually in obese cats, with the longer-term aim of extending the technology to dogs and potentially other species. A small placebo-controlled study published on PubMed found exenatide was generally well tolerated in obese cats, although its effects on metabolism were limited.

Even so, the evidence base remains thin. Key questions on safety, durability of weight loss and quality of life are unresolved. For now, veterinarians still recommend the basics: controlled feeding, calorie restriction and more exercise.
