The National Sheep Association launches a survey to gauge demand for the 2027 bluetongue vaccine, aiming to prevent shortages and shape future trading practices amid shifting market attitudes.

The National Sheep Association has launched a survey aimed at helping secure enough bluetongue vaccine for the 2027 season after widespread shortages of BTV-3 doses during this year’s outbreak.

The association is working with manufacturers, veterinary practices and governments to avoid a repeat of supply constraints, warning that producers need clear demand signals months in advance because vaccine production and delivery take several months.

NSA chief executive Phil Stocker said the exercise is intended to give manufacturers the confidence to produce at the scale needed. He said farmers were facing difficulties accessing vaccine and that the association wants to prevent the problem recurring.

The survey asks sheep producers how many animals they expect to vaccinate in 2027, broken down by stock group, and whether they would consider placing an advance order through their vet this autumn. It also asks what conditions would need to be in place before they commit to buying.

In a further sign of shifting market attitudes, the NSA is asking whether vaccination status might start to influence sheep trading, including whether buyers would seek vaccinated stock and whether such animals should command a premium.

Mr Stocker said farmers are not being asked to make a financial commitment now, only to provide honest indications of intent. Responses will remain confidential, with only combined findings shared with manufacturers, vets and government. The survey closes on 13 September 2026.
