Researchers identify a novel orthobunyavirus in cattle in Switzerland, France, and Germany, prompting swift diagnostic and surveillance efforts amid reassurance of low public health risk.
A newly identified orthobunyavirus has been found in cattle in Switzerland, southern Germany and eastern France, prompting rapid diagnostic work across the region. According to French veterinary researchers, the virus is spreading through biting midges and appears to cause fever, diarrhoea and short-lived drops in milk yield, rather than severe disease.
Jean-Luc Guérin, a professor at the Toulouse veterinary school and researcher at Inrae, told Agri Mutuel there was “no panic”, adding that the infection does not appear to pose a public health risk, including through milk consumption. The French agriculture ministry said cases have also been reported in the Doubs, Ain, Savoie and Haute-Savoie.
The episode is drawing comparisons with Schmallenberg virus, which emerged in western Europe in 2011 and caused abortions and fetal malformations in ruminants. That history has sharpened surveillance, particularly in dairy regions already sensitised by last year’s dermatological disease outbreak.
Researchers said the pathogen was identified within days using metagenomic sequencing and that field laboratories will soon receive diagnostic tools. Companies are already beginning vaccine work, although that will take months.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control says genetically related orthobunyaviruses have not been known to cause human disease, though it does not rule out a change in behaviour, underscoring the need for joint animal and human health monitoring.
