Gamgee advances personalised mRNA cancer vaccines for dogs using AI and genomic sequencing
A Sydney startup backed by Y Combinator is pioneering bespoke mRNA cancer vaccines for dogs, leveraging genomic sequencing and AI. While still in early stages, the development could have wider implications for both veterinary and human cancer therapies.
Paul Conyngham’s dog Rosie was facing the end of the road when standard treatments failed. Instead of accepting that prognosis, the Sydney entrepreneur used ChatGPT, genomic sequencing and academic collaborators at UNSW to help build a bespoke mRNA cancer vaccine matched to the mutations in her tumour. Several tumours then shrank, and her quality of life improved, according to Y Combinator and Gamgee.
That experiment has now become Gamgee, a Y Combinator-backed startup developing personalised mRNA cancer vaccines for dogs. The company says it handles the process from veterinary intake and tissue collection through sequencing, target selection, vaccine manufacture and response monitoring. It is currently enrolling dogs in clinical trials in Australia and is also accepting cases internationally.
The science is plausible but still early. A Veterinary oncologist writing in The Conversation urged caution, noting that one positive case cannot establish efficacy and that tumour regression can occur for reasons unrelated to treatment. The main test now is whether controlled trials can show consistent benefit across different cancers and breeds.
Gamgee’s broader significance may lie in translational medicine. Dogs develop many of the same cancers as humans, but veterinary trials move faster and face fewer regulatory hurdles. If the approach works, it could add weight to the case for personalised mRNA cancer vaccines more generally.
