The FDA’s 2024-2028 antimicrobial resistance plan seeks to limit or reverse resistance associated with animal antibiotic use while preserving access to safe and effective medicines. Other FDA policies have already pushed the sector towards more controlled use, including guidance on durations of use for certain feed-based antimicrobials and the shift of some products from over-the-counter to prescription status.
The public-health rationale is stark. Research cited by the Food and Drug Administration suggests antimicrobial resistance was linked to 4.95 million deaths worldwide in 2019. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention says resistant bacteria can spread from food and animals to people, making prevention and stewardship central to the wider response.
