Elanco’s exit from cattle implant market signals potential supply squeeze for beef producers

Elanco is withdrawing from cattle growth implants entirely, taking its Component, Encore and Compudose lines off the market once existing stock is exhausted and reducing North America’s implant suppliers from three to two. The exit removes competitive tension from a category worth significant return on investment to feedlots and cow-calf operators, and creates a practical switching cost that goes beyond the product itself.

The withdrawal stems from a restructuring plan announced in late 2025, under which Elanco confirmed its exit from certain farm animal implant products alongside the closure of a Kansas manufacturing site during 2026. Once current inventory clears, the entire line goes, including Compudose — the 25.7mg estradiol silicone implant delivering controlled release over 200 days in suckling steers, pastured growing cattle and finishing animals.

That leaves Merck Animal Health, with Ralgro and the Revalor range, and Zoetis, with Synovex, as the remaining suppliers across the United States and Canada. Direct substitutes exist: Synovex C, Ralgro and Revalor G all cover the ground Compudose occupied. The near-term question is whether the two remaining manufacturers can scale production quickly enough as displaced Elanco customers redistribute across their portfolios.

The less obvious cost is hardware. Implant guns are proprietary to each manufacturer, so producers switching away from Compudose or Encore must also replace applicators and needles. Pricing practice differs between the two remaining suppliers — one provides guns and needles at no charge, the other does not. In most Canadian regions, cattle implants other than calf implants must be sourced through a herd veterinarian, adding a further step to any transition.

Elanco’s implant portfolio had already been narrowing. Its Component with Tylan products were discontinued in December 2023 following FDA guidance that moved them to prescription status, and Compudose and Encore were reformulated with a sodium bicarbonate coating in March 2024 to retain over-the-counter availability.
Producers are advised to audit inventory, check expiry dates and confirm applicator compatibility before the transition bites.
