Three developments have converged for Elanco within days of one another: the on-time completion of a $120 million biologics manufacturing expansion in Elwood, Kansas, quadrupling capacity as demand for Befrena runs at twice forecast; a Seventh Circuit ruling upholding dismissal of a securities class action over alleged revenue inflation; and reports that Thermo Fisher’s drug development arm is evaluating Elanco’s vacated Greenfield, Indiana building.

Elanco has completed a 25,000-square-foot expansion of its Elwood, Kansas biologics manufacturing site, delivering the project on time and increasing production capacity more than fourfold. The $120 million investment includes upstream and downstream processing equipment, a new pilot plant to accelerate process development and supply clinical trial materials, and a new advanced quality control laboratory. A further $30 million is planned through 2028 for additional warehousing, taking total investment to $150 million.
The timing is commercially critical. CEO Jeff Simmons confirmed that customer demand for Befrena — the anti-IL-31 monoclonal antibody for canine allergic and atopic dermatitis launched in phased rollout this year — is running at twice expectations, with the company anticipating unconstrained supply levels by early 2027. Elwood also manufactures Trutect, Elanco’s first mAb and the only approved therapeutic for canine parvovirus. Elanco is one of only two animal health companies with monoclonal antibody products on the market.

Separately, the Seventh Circuit has upheld dismissal of a securities class action against the company, finding insufficient evidence of fraudulent intent in allegations concerning revenue inflation and distribution practices — removing a legal overhang that had followed the business since its post-IPO period.

Meanwhile in Greenfield, Indiana, Pharmaceutical Product Development, the drug development arm owned by Thermo Fisher Scientific, is reported to be evaluating a move into Elanco’s vacated building at 2710 Innovation Way, potentially retaining the site within the life sciences sector.
