CERES TAG and University of Wyoming Deploy Satellite Monitoring Across 300 Cattle in Mountain Grazing Research
CERES TAG has partnered with the University of Wyoming’s RangeLab to fit more than 300 cattle with direct-to-satellite monitoring devices across Wyoming’s mountain grazing terrain, combining real-time livestock location and behaviour data with RangeView’s pasture biomass measurement to give producers practical tools for reducing predator losses and improving rangeland management in some of North America’s most challenging grazing environments.
CERES TAG has partnered with the University of Wyoming’s RangeLab, led by Dr Nicki Nimlos, on a precision livestock research project that places satellite-connected ear tags on more than 300 cattle grazing across Wyoming’s remote mountain pastures.
The project is designed to address two persistent challenges for western US producers: locating cattle across vast, rugged terrain and mitigating losses to predation. By gathering continuous location and behavioural data through CERES TAG’s direct-to-satellite platform, researchers aim to identify movement patterns, detect anomalies associated with predator interactions, and build a clearer picture of how cattle utilise available forage throughout the grazing season.
RangeView by Envu is contributing as a software partner, integrating pasture biomass measurement with CERES TAG’s livestock movement data. The combination allows researchers to correlate grazing distribution with forage removal across individual pastures , connecting animal behaviour to rangeland productivity in a way that has not previously been possible at this scale in mountain grazing systems.
Macade Peart, CERES TAG Sales Lead for North Central US, said the research would provide producers with practical tools to improve management and reduce losses in some of the most demanding grazing environments anywhere.
Data gathered throughout the project will feed into ongoing University of Wyoming research on livestock movement, predator interactions, grazing distribution and pasture utilisation, with outputs aimed at improving the profitability and sustainability of western grazing operations.
