The Cat Health Company has announced positive results from its first clinical trial of PURR-1, a pioneering therapy targeting age-related muscle loss in cats, marking a significant advance in feline geriatric medicine.

The Cat Health Company, a longevity-focused veterinary biotech that raised $1.2 million in its most recent funding round, has released clinical trial data for PURR-1, its lead multi-target therapeutic candidate for feline sarcopenia , the progressive age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass that affects senior cats and contributes directly to frailty, reduced mobility, injury risk and reduced resilience during illness or hospitalisation.

The trial, described as randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled, demonstrated statistically significant positive effects on key measures of age-related muscle loss compared to placebo. The company says it believes this to be the first clinical trial of any treatment specifically targeting primary age-related sarcopenia in cats , a notable first in an indication that has been largely overlooked by the broader animal health industry despite its clinical relevance.

Sarcopenia is a significant but under-recognised problem in feline medicine. Older cats frequently lose lean muscle mass even while maintaining stable body weight, as fat deposits can mask the change. The consequences include impaired joint support, reduced functional strength and greater vulnerability during surgical or medical interventions.

The Cat Health Company is also developing PURR-2, a second therapeutic candidate for sarcopenia, alongside preclinical compounds targeting renal hypertension, fibrosis and feline cognitive decline syndrome , an Alzheimer’s-like condition in older cats
