Boehringer Ingelheim integrates Owkin’s K Pro platform to accelerate AI-driven drug discovery in oncology and immunology
Boehringer Ingelheim is joining major pharma firms in adopting Owkin’s AI platform, signalling a shift towards mainstream use of AI tools in biological research and personalised medicine.
Boehringer Ingelheim has become the latest big pharmaceutical group to adopt Owkin’s K Pro platform, extending a push by the French-American AI firm into mainstream drug discovery. After a pilot in 2025, the German company will use the system more widely across oncology and immunology research, with Owkin saying the arrangement includes access to multimodal patient data as well as its agentic AI tools.
The platform is designed to let scientists interrogate complex biological and clinical datasets in plain language, rather than through conventional coding. Owkin says the software can help teams assess targets, identify patient subgroups and produce reproducible analyses from different data types.
The move follows earlier deals with AstraZeneca and Sanofi, both announced this year. AstraZeneca took a three-year licence, while Sanofi agreed a five-year collaboration to co-develop new AI agents for research workflows. Together, the agreements suggest large drugmakers are shifting from exploratory AI trials towards deeper integration of such tools into everyday decision-making.
Owkin says the pilot with Boehringer used its MOSAIC cancer dataset and yielded useful spatial insights into the tumour microenvironment around a gene target. Financial terms were not disclosed.
