ArkeaBio raises $15m in Series A2 funding led by AgriZeroNZ to advance its methane-reducing cattle vaccine. The Boston start-up narrows focus to New Zealand, aiming for regulatory approval and revenue by 2028, amid pressure for scalable climate solutions in livestock emissions.

ArkeaBio has raised $15m in a Series A2 round led by AgriZeroNZ, with backing from Breakthrough Energy, as it pushes a methane-reducing cattle vaccine towards market. The Boston start-up has also cut staff by about a third, a sign of the capital discipline now shaping climate-tech ventures that must prove commercial traction as well as scientific promise.

Chief executive Frank Wooten told AgFunderNews the company had narrowed its focus to New Zealand, its first product and its earliest revenues. He said the funding should carry ArkeaBio through its first commercial launch, with a regulatory filing expected next year and revenue targeted for 2028.

The vaccine is designed to prompt cattle to generate antibodies against methane-producing microbes in the rumen, potentially diverting hydrogen towards compounds that aid digestion and productivity. ArkeaBio expects an initial reduction of around 10% to 15%, below some feed additives but easier to deploy across markets where many animals are not finished on feed, Wooten said.

He added that the firm is exploring co-formulation with existing dairy vaccines, which could lower the cost burden. In a sector where livestock emissions are under growing scrutiny, the commercial appeal of a vaccine will depend on durability, dosing frequency and whether farmers see enough economic upside to adopt it at scale.
