Ambienta has formed a Nordic aquaculture technology platform uniting four businesses across feeding, health, monitoring and delousing, reflecting a surge in private capital interest to enhance margins and welfare amid increasing market demand and regulatory pressures.

Ambienta has assembled a Nordic aquaculture technology platform from four businesses spanning feeding systems, fish health, monitoring and delousing, a move that reflects private capital’s growing appetite for tools that can improve margins and welfare in salmon farming. The deal also underlines how consolidation in aquaculture services is being driven by demand for higher productivity, lower chemical use and tighter environmental controls.

The group, backed by Ambienta IV, brings together Norway’s BioMarine, FLS and Smir, plus Faroese specialist GroAqua, under the leadership of chief executive Sverre Taknes. Ambienta says the combination should create cross-selling opportunities and accelerate product development across technologies used in fish health, feed optimisation, equipment, farming systems and waste treatment.

BioMarine, founded in 2000, supplies underwater lighting, oxygenation and circulation systems, as well as monitoring and protective equipment. FLS, whose roots go back to 1913, offers mechanical delousing technology alongside oxygen generation, biomass counting and digital monitoring. Smir, founded in 2015, focuses on waterborne feeding and UV-C systems to curb sea lice. GroAqua, established in 1972, provides integrated feeding systems, sludge treatment and feed barges across the Faroe Islands, the UK and Norway.

Ambienta says the aquaculture market is worth €20bn and could double within a decade. Tjaldur, an existing shareholder in GroAqua, is reinvesting, while the GroAqua transaction still needs regulatory approval.
